PROJECT

GOAL OF OUR PROJECT

The discourse on social responsibility in the organisation of sport events is conducted intensively. The project “Sustainable Major Sport Events in Germany” incorporates the impulses from society, politics, and sport and transfers essential focus areas into action. Objectives include the development of a practice-oriented guide and toolbox for organisers of future sport events based on science, as well as the development of minimum standards. The standards and measures are being developed for major sport events and will perspectively be scalable to all sport events, including minor and medi sport events.

It has long been clear that competitive sports, with increasingly gigantic global competitions, have an enormous ecological footprint. I’m excited to consider within this context not only the minimisation of it, but also particularly the significant importance of sports for societal advancements.

Mareike Miller

Sport and sport events are leading industries and a driver of social growth. Therefore, we must ensure that we define goals for comprehensive sustainable development and develop implementation strategies that sport events become a welcoming place for all those involved in the conflict between economic and environmental objectives.

Detlef Berthold

“Goals require actions” – in sports and when implementing sustainable development.

Klaus Reuter

FIFA, UEFA, and the IOC began in 2016/2017 to incorporate sustainability for their major events, not limited solely to the environment. The pillar of social aspects, particularly human rights, was included in application criteria and hosting agreements, and the demand for compliance systems has since supported the implementation. It is now time for Germany not only to take note of international developments but also to establish compliance and human rights as the basis for major sport events nationally, and to further advance the international debate through efforts by the German Olympic Sports Confederation.

Sylvia Schenk

Major sport events are highlights in urban event calendars: they put sports in the spotlight, bring the city community together, and allow a city to showcase itself. The work of the advisory board is very helpful in connecting sustainability with event concepts – thereby ensuring that the climate strategies of cities and major sport events can complement each other effectively.

Daniela Schneckenburger

As winter sports enthusiasts, we are directly affected by the effects of climate change in all areas and disciplines. At the same time, we are convinced that winter sports in all its facets will continue to be a need for people in the coming decades. That is why we are committed to sustainability and, above all, to the protection of mountains and nature. And not only since “Fridays for future”, but already for several decades. We do not leave it to warm words, we do something! Continuous and consistent. In all our areas of responsibility and action. This includes, among other things, using our available systems efficiently, resource conserving and intergenerational.
